The Storyboard (Blog #32) PLANNING

When I started planning my film opening, I knew I needed a way to truly understand how my idea would translate onto the screen. I didn’t want to rely only on written notes or a traditional drawn storyboard, as I’ve learned for this class, creativity is key, so I started looking for more creative and engaging ways to see how my shots would play out. I wanted something that would help me see the film as a whole rather than just imaging it in my head.

The idea truly came to me out of nowhere. One day, one of my friends randomly brought a LEGO minifigure to school, and it hit me. At that moment, I realized LEGO would be the perfect way to build my storyboard. It felt like a fun but practical solution that would let me plan visually without limiting myself to simple sketches especially because I can’t draw or whatsoever.

(Thanks Sophia for being random giving me an idea through it)

Using LEGO made the planning process much more hands-on. I also decided to make Batman be Clare because why not. I was able to physically build scenes and place my character into different positions, which helped me picture how each shot would look when filmed. Seeing the scenes laid out in front of me made my ideas feel more real and easier to organize.

Another big advantage of using LEGO was being able to experiment with camera angles and shot composition. I could move the figures around, change perspectives, and test different framing ideas without any pressure of having to stick to the shot list since this was also a way to play around with possible camera angles I can add to the shot list. This allowed me to think more carefully about how each shot would communicate emotion and story visually.

The LEGO storyboard also helped me understand the pacing and flow of my film opening. By planning the shots in order, I could see how smoothly scenes transited and whether anything felt rushed or unnecessary. This made it easier to make adjustments before moving on to filming.

Overall, creating my storyboard with LEGO turned out to be both creative and effective. It gave me a clear vision of how my film opening would play out and made me feel more confident heading into production. Choosing a more imaginative approach to storyboarding helped ensure my final film would be well-planned while still staying true to my original idea.
